On September 19, Chinese Library for Children (CLC) joined Pittsburgh’s Chinese Cultural Festival with free hands-on sugar painting, mythological storytelling, and photo opportunities with Chang’e, the legendary moon goddess.

Children created their own sugar paintings, exploring a traditional Chinese folk art through hands-on fun. Carrying an osmanthus branch and accompanied by the Jade Rabbit, Chang’e shared stories from Chinese mythology and connected them to the modern Chang’e lunar exploration program and Tiangong space station—taking children from an imagined moon palace to real-world space exploration.

Through creative activities and stories spanning past and present, CLC invited children and families of all backgrounds to discover Chinese culture, bringing tradition, imagination, and science together.

Organized by the Pittsburgh Chinese Culture Center, Pittsburgh’s Chinese Cultural Festival is a major annual celebration rooted in the Chinese community and open to everyone. It brings together neighbors of diverse backgrounds for a festive day shared by the whole community. CLC was delighted to contribute by bringing a children’s perspective to the celebration, adding hands-on cultural experiences that give young participants a place to explore, create, and connect.
